Ani has an inny!

We had our first “we’re nervous new parents” trip to the pediatrician on Friday. It is now no longer common practice to treat the stump of the umbilical cord with alcohol, but instead to let it dry up on its own. Studies have shown that there is no difference in infection rate and this usually makes it fall off a day or two faster. We, of course, had not been using alcohol to clean the stump. However, we noticed when we gave Anya a bath that there was white pus building up behind the cord, so Lex called the doctor’s office and they said bring her in to be checked. The doctor looked, said it wasn’t anything to worry about, and treated it with silver nitrate to help dry the pus.

Last night, during either the 2 am or 4:30 am diaper change (who can tell at this point?), while Anya was screaming at the indignity of having her cute little tushy wiped by her daddy, we happily discovered that the stump had at last fallen off completely. Now baby Anya has a an adorable, pus-free inny!
