Math

Anya has recently gotten much better at counting objects accurately. Today during lunch she told me she had six peapods on her plate, which was correct. She picked one up to eat it, and I asked her how many she had left. She counted again – five. When she ate the next one, I asked her again how many she had left, and WITHOUT counting she told me, “Four!” She got it right for the next two as well. Maybe there’s still hope that she’ll enjoy math as much as I do…

Anya’s dance recital was today, and Lauren and I agree — she performed absolutely magnificently.

Anya’s first school pictures

I’ve been meaning to post these for weeks!  Anya had her school pictures done back in March, I think.  I asked her if she was going to smile for the camera and she insisted that she would not.  When I picked her up that day, she assured me that she hadn’t.  To her credit, at least she’s honest:

I find that picture very amusing.  I declined to purchase the big package but kept the “ClassMate” folder with a 4 x 5 of her photo and the class picture.  She was slightly more enthused about posing for the group shot:

The Mental Institution

Me: Anya, you are going to send me to the mental institution.
Anya: Can I come too, Daddy?

Breakfast Conversations

Daddy: Did you eat your cheese, or did you put it somewhere?
Anya: I put it somewhere.
Daddy: Where?
Anya: In my mouth.

Anya: Deers!
(She was correct. There were lots of deer in the backyard.)
Anya (cont’d): Later, we can go in the woods with Mommy and Sierra and Daddy and Anya and play with the deers. Because they love us!
(Daddy retells this story to Mommy.)
Anya: And Charlie, too!

Red in the Face

We had a playdate with one of Anya’s friends at the park this morning.  It was very hot out today.  When we were getting back into the car, I told Anya she needed to drink all of her water up because her face was very red.  She looked up at me, eyes wide with innocence, and asked, “Did someone paint me, Mama?”

Anya’s “Seder” at School

Anya’s preschool class had a Passover “Seder” last Thursday for the parents to attend.  They told the story of Passover and sang some songs, and then they ate some of the holiday foods.

Acting out another part of the story:

Anya really enjoys the song about the frogs.  I did film the entire show, though she spent most of it with her fingers in her mouth.  I always expect but am still bowled over by how different Anya is in a big group like that.  She gets so overwhelmed by the amount of people in the room that she completely clams up.  A stranger observing her would think she doesn’t talk.  Her teacher has commented several times to me about how quiet Anya is – yes, the very same Anya who acts out entire Dora books or episodes with her dolls and then makes up her own stories, the one who NEVER GIVES US A MOMENT’S PEACE at home!  What a silly little girl.  I guess she was serious when she assured me that she is shy.

Anya’s Tutu

I made Anya a tutu today (thank you Nickie for the instructions and inspiration!).  She tried it on with her ballerina dress and her tiara before bedtime tonight:

My cute little Anya

Anya has done a few things that I have found quite amusing over the last few days:

At the end of her bath, she started pushing the water toward the drain. I asked her what she was doing, and she told me, “I’m helping the water into the thing.”

This morning, she examined my pajama pants and told me, “They don’t have any feet.” I asked, “Who, the snowmen?” (See the picture below) “Yeah, they have hands and heads and hats, though. And they have star cookies!” Me: “Those are cookies?” She replied, “They can eat them!”

Normally I don’t like it when Anya plays with her food, but I had to laugh at dinner tonight.  She was enjoying her salad of fresh spinach and shredded carrots.  She picked up a carrot, bent it into a circle, and launched into this dialogue:  “Look, I made an O.  What does the O say? Nothing?  No, the O says Ahh. Should I make another letter?  What does it look like?  It’s a Q.  Now I made a P.  And an A…”  This game continued until the carrot broke and she ate it.  Then she picks up a spinach leaf, holds it out to me, and says, “Look at my guitar!”

Whoa.

When did Anya get so big that she is now way taller standing than I am sitting on the floor?
